A system and method are disclosed for a cost sensitive evaluation and classification system. The invention may be applied to a call classification system. In one aspect, a boosting algorithm is modified so that in the iterative process of selecting weak classifiers for combination to generate a strong classifier, the algorithm incorporates a cost or weight of classes when choosing the weak classifiers. The resulting strong classifier shows improvement in successfully identifying important classes such as call-types. Another aspect of the invention involves shifting confidence scores associated with classifier output according to the cost of classes. The confidence scores are shifted such that the accept/reject decisions of different classes (call-types) are made differently to reduce the cost.
