A system (10) where heat energy is recovered from an intercooled gas turbine engine (11). This system (10) comprises: (a) at least one gas turbine engine (11); (b) a compressed air stream (38) that receives energy from the at least one gas turbine engine (11); (c) at least one intercooler (30) that extracts the energy from the compressed air stream (38), and (d) at least one heating district (36). In this system (10), the at least one intercooler (30) and the at least one heating district (36) is connected by a fluid circulating loop (40) to transfer the extracted energy from the at least one intercooler (30) to the at least one heating district (36). Another embodiment involves a method for controlling the ratio of heat energy to output shaft energy removed from an operating intercooled gas turbine engine (11), which comprises the step of: varying the amount of energy removed by at least one intercooler (30) from a flowing gas stream (38) of the gas turbine engine (11).
