An electronic mail system and method enables the originator of a message (2) sent by electronic mail to select a date, time, or event at which the message and all incarnations of the message to self-destruct, regardless of the number and types of computers or software systems that may have interacted with the message, and/or to include processing and handling limitations. The necessary control over the message is achieved by encrypting the message and enabling viewing only through a viewer applet (4) arranged to facilitate destruction of the message upon the occurrence of the selected expiration time, date, or event, and/or to implement the handling and processing limitations. A central server (1) can be used to exercise additional control over the message by serving as a proxy destination, and by transmitting the encrypted message to the viewer applet (4). In the case where a central mail server (1) is required to enable forwarding of messages, the central server (1) tracks the messages and compiles lists including the identities of all individuals or groups to whom the message has been forwarded, and information on handling of the messages by those to whom the message has been sent sent or forwarded.
L'invention concerne un système et un procédé de courrier électronique permettant à l'expéditeur d'un message (2) envoyé par courrier électronique de sélectionner une date, une heure ou un événement en correspondance desquels le message et tous ses éléments s'autodétruisent, indépendamment du nombre et du type d'ordinateurs ou de systèmes logiciels ayant pu interagir avec le message, et/ou d'inclure des restrictions de traitement. On obtient le contrôle nécessaire du message en cryptant ce dernier et en autorisant sa visualisation uniquement au moyen d'une mini-application de visualisation (4) conçue pour simplifier la destruction du message lorsque l'heure, la date ou l'événement de destruction surviennent, et/ou pour mettre en oeuvre les restrictions de traitement. Afin d'exercer un contrôle accru sur le message, on peut utiliser un serveur central (1) servant de destination substitutive et transmettre le message crypté à la mini-application de visualisation (4). Dans le cas où un serveur de courrier central (1) est nécessaire pour permettre le réacheminement des messages, ce serveur central (1) poursuit les messages et compile des listes contenant les identités de toutes les personnes ou groupes à qui le message a été réexpédié, ainsi que les informations concernant le traitement des messages par ceux à qui on a envoyé ou fait suivre le message en question.
