The invention comprises an Internet-based software system providing directory and management services for disparate trading communities. The invention provides centralized control over the parameters and rules governing trades between the communities. Rules and guidelines for each community are maintained along with profiles for the individual entities. Each profile is available to all other members of a community. The invention includes defined external interfaces that allow other software products to utilize the services provided by the software system. These software products include third party business-to-business software, such as trading engines or document exchange facilities. Embodiments of the invention include an object repository. The object repository may include tree-based data structures containing objects representing organizations and trading communities.
