A system for measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a fiber using a polarizer controlling the polarization state of light input to the fiber and a polarization analyzer measuring the polarization state of light output from the fiber. Jones matrix analysis is applied to data derived from three input polarization states and two wavelenghts of probing radiation. Performance is improved by using incoherent light sources such as light emitting diodes in conjunction with two bandpass filters. However, a laser source and optical detector are used to align the fiber. The system is particularly useful in measuring PMD values in short lengths of fiber and mapping those values with a long fiber from which the test fiber was cut. Preferably, the PMD is measured for various values of twist experimentally induced in the test fiber, and the short-length PMD value is that associated with zero-internal twist in the fiber as calculated according to a model. The fiber may also be loaded during measurement.
L'invention concerne un système conçu pour mesurer une dispersion de polarisation de mode (DPM) dans une fibre au moyen d'un polariseur qui commande l'état de polarisation de l'entrée de lumière vers la fibre et un analyseur de polarisation qui mesure l'état de polarisation de la sortie de lumière de la fibre. On applique l'analyse de matrice de Jones aux données dérivées de trois états de polarisation et deux longueurs d'onde de rayonnement d'exploration. On améliore la performance en utilisant des sources de lumière incohérentes telles que des diodes électroluminescentes conjointement avec deux filtres passe-bande. Cependant, on utilise une source laser et un capteur optique pour aligner la fibre. Le système est particulièrement utile pour mesurer des valeurs DPM en longueurs courtes et les représenter avec une fibre longue dont on a prélevé la fibre pour essai. De préférence, la DPM est mesurée pour différentes valeurs de torsion induites expérimentalement dans la fibre pour essai, la valeur de la DPM à longueur courte étant celle associée à la torsion interne nulle dans la fibre calculée selon le modèle. On peut également charger la fibre lors de la mesure.
