A system and a method are disclosed for measuring the grip performance of a vehicle (10) through relation to a lumped-sum parameter derived from force and displacement measurements taken from selected elements forming the suspension (30) of the vehicle. For at least one wheel (20, 24) of the vehicle, the magnitude and relative direction of the instantaneous load force vector acting on each support member (48a, b, 54a, b, etc.) thereof are measured. The load force vectors are resolved with respect to a relative plane into a first load force component, a second load force component, and a third load force component normal to said first and second components. The load force components are then related to a common reference plane to derive normalized load force components, which normalized components are then summed to derive normalized first, second and third load force components which correspond to the instantaneous grip force developed between the wheel of the vehicle and the ground surface.

Système et procédé destinés à mesurer la tenue de route d'un véhicule (10) en établissant la relation à un paramètre global dérivé de mesures de force et de déplacement obtenues à partir d'éléments sélectionnés formant la suspension (30) du véhicule. Pour au moins une roue (20, 24) du véhicule, on mesure la grandeur et la direction relative du vecteur de force de charge instantané agissant sur chaque élément de support (48a,b, 54a,b, etc.) de ladite roue. Les vecteurs de force de charge sont décomposés par rapport à un plan relatif en une première composante de force de charge, une deuxième composante de force de charge et une troisième composante de force de charge verticale par rapport aux première et deuxième composantes. Les composantes de force de charge sont ensuite mises en rapport avec un plan de référence commun, ce qui permet de dériver des composantes de force de charge normalisées. Ces dernières composantes sont ensuite additionnées pour dériver des première, deuxième et troisième composantes de force de charge qui correspondent à la force de tenue de route instantanée développée entre la roue du véhicule et la surface du sol.
