A system and method of protecting all the amplifiers in a link between wavelength routing network elements of an optical network. According to the invention, an optical control channel is added before a plurality of optical amplifier, preferably the first amplifier, in a link. To prevent improper loading of downstream links, the control channel is stripped off at the next wavelength routing network element. The power of the control channel is automatically adjusted using a fast feedback circuit to hold substantially constant the total power of the signal channels and the control channel at the input of the first amplifier following the feedback loop. In this manner, channel loading of all optical amplifiers in the link is maintained substantially constant, and the incidence of error bursts, as might otherwise result when one or more channels are added or dropped due to a network fault or reconfiguration, is substantially reduced.
Système et méthode de protection de tous les amplificateurs d'une liaison entre les éléments d'un réseau d'acheminement de longueurs d'onde d'un réseau optique. Selon l'invention, un canal de commande optique est ajouté avant un certain nombre d'amplificateurs optiques, préférablement le premier amplificateur, d'une liaison. Afin d'empêcher le chargement incorrect de liaisons descendantes, le canal de commande est retiré à l'élément suivant du réseau d'acheminement de longueurs d'onde. La puissance du canal de commande se règle automatiquement par un circuit à rétroaction rapide, qui maintient à peu près constante la puissance totale des canaux de signaux et du canal de commande à l'entrée du premier amplificateur suivant la boucle de rétroaction. Ainsi, le chargement des canaux de tous les amplificateurs optiques de la liaison est maintenu à peu près constant, et l'incidence des salves d'erreurs, pouvant autrement provenir de l'ajout ou de la suppression d'un canal ou plus en cas de défaillance ou de reconfiguration de réseau, se trouve considérablement réduite.
