A toxicant detection system comprises at least one watertight chamber containing a mollusk. Water to be screened is introduced into the chamber. A sensing apparatus is provided which detects the position of the mollusk when the shell opens and closes. The sensing apparatus preferably includes a Hall effect transducer which co-acts with a magnet associated with the mollusk. The data derived from movement of the shell is used to determine the presence of toxicants in the water. The data is analyzed to detect initial pumping of the mollusk shell in response to rising levels of toxin. The variance of recent gapes of the mollusk may be used to derive a degree of alarm value. Neural nets may be trained according to the system to detect toxicants in general, or to identify individual toxicants in the water based on behavior of the mollusk.
L'invention concerne un système de détection de substances toxiques muni d'au moins une chambre étanche à l'eau renfermant un mollusque. On introduit de l'eau à analyser dans cette chambre. Un appareil de détection permet de détecter la position du mollusque lorsque la coquille s'ouvre et se referme. Cet appareil de détection comprend de préférence un transducteur à effet Hall coopérant avec un aimant associé au mollusque. On utilise les données dérivées du mouvement de la coquille pour établir la présence de substances toxiques dans l'eau. L'analyse de ces données permet de détecter le pompage initial de la coquille du mollusque en réponse à des niveaux croissants de toxine. On peut utiliser la variance des ouvertures du mollusque pour obtenir un degré de valeur d'alerte. Selon l'invention, on peut également utiliser des réseaux neuronaux formés par apprentissage, ces réseaux pouvant détecter la présence de substances toxiques en général ou identifier des substances toxiques particulières dans l'eau sur la base du comportement de ce mollusque.
