A raster image processing system (20) for producing the appropriate number and set of halftoned color separations for a select output device (24) is disclosed. The raster image processing system (20) includes a processing unit (30), an interpreter (32) and a color combiner (34). The interpreter (32) and color combiner (34) are application processes that are controlled by software running on the processing unit (30). The processing unit (30) identifies the number and set of colorants used to describe input image data and the number and set of halftoned color separations that a select output imaging device (24) is capable of rendering. The interpreter (32) converts the input data describing an image that is composed of "N" colorants into "N" halftoned color separations. The color combiner (34) thereafter converts the N halftoned color separations into "M" halftoned color separations that are ideally suited for the particular output device (24) chosen by a user of the system. The color combiner (34) performs this conversion by utilizing digital filtering and combining processes.
L'invention concerne un système de traitement d'images tramées (20) destiné à produire le nombre et la série adéquats de séparations de couleurs en demi-tons pour un dispositif de sortie sélectionné (24). Le système de traitement d'images tramées (20) comporte une unité de traitement (30), un interpréteur (32) et une unité de combinaison de couleurs (34). Ces derniers sont des processus d'application qui sont commandés par des logiciels exploités par l'unité de traitement (30). Cette dernière identifie le nombre et la série des colorants utilisés pour décrire des données d'images d'entrée et le nombre et la série de séparations de couleurs en demi-tons qu'un dispositif de sortie sélectionné (24) est capable de produire. L'interpréteur (32) transforme les données d'entrée décrivant une image composée de <= N >= colorants en <= N >= séparations de couleurs en demi-tons. L'unité de combinaison de couleurs (34) transforme ensuite les N séparations de couleurs en demi-tons en <= M >= séparations de couleurs en demi-tons qui correspondent parfaitement au dispositif de sortie (24) choisi par un utilisateur du système. L'unité de combinaison de couleurs (34) effectue cette transformation au moyen du filtrage numérique et de processus de combinaison.
