The invention relates to a system and method for reading optically encoded information. The invention comprises a system for reading optically encoded information in a field of view of an optical scanner comprising: sensor means for detecting light from two distinct regions in the field of view, and in response therein, producing two electrical signals corresponding to the light intensity detected in the two regions; and a decoder responsive to both channels of derived data for producing a data output representative of the optically encoded information.
