ABSTRACT A system and method for remotely tripping a switch located in a remote location, such as a vehicle. In the system and method, a telephone and central switching facility are used to transmit a triggering signal over-the- air to a receiver located in the vehicle in order to prevent theft or improper use of the vehicle. The triggering signal can be relayed through a satellite. Upon receiving the signal, the receiver sends an input signal to a tripping circuit. In response to the input signal, the tripping circuit trips a switch, thereby interrupting the vehicle's ignition and/or activating a vehicle alarm system or vehicle homing transmitter.
