A system and method for the geomechanical steering of the orientation ofa wellbore is disclosed. In one embodi-ment, any available a priori data regarding the stress characteristics of a region of interest are used to develop a preliminary stress model for the region. A geosteered drilling operation is thereafter commenced, with the trajectory being steered in a direction rela-tive to the stress model of the region. While drilling, real-time data is obtained from conventional down-hole instrumentation. The real-time data is used to refine the stress model for the region, such that the trajectory can be guided on an ongoing basis to achieve an optimal relationship with the measured stress characteristics of the region.

L'invention concerne un système et un procédé d'orientation géomécanique de l'orientation d'un puits de forage. Selon une variante, on utilise toutes données disponibles a priori relatives aux caractéristiques de contrainte d'une zone d'intérêt pour établir un modèle de contrainte préliminaire concernant la zone. Ensuite, il est possible de lancer une opération de forage à géoguidage, l'orientation de la trajectoire se faisant selon une direction relative au modèle de contrainte de la zone. Pendant le forage, les données en temps réel sont recueillies à partir d'instruments de fond de trou classiques, et elles sont utilisées pour l'affinage du modèle de contrainte relatif à la zone, de manière à permettre une orientation de trajectoire de façon continue qui débouche sur une relation optimale avec les caractéristiques de contrainte mesurées propres à la zone.
