An electronic book (20) on a computer readable medium (60), e.g., a CD or the like, has "real-life" pre-recorded audio (161) (preferable, in MP3 format (165) and virtual text in XML format (120) such that a reader can switch back and forth "at will" between read aloud by an external narrator (150). The computer readable medium (60) includes a reader program installed thereon and an automatic installation program. A novel process for creating the electronic book (20) includes a creator program that may have a similar graphical user interface to the reader program. The electronic book (20) may combine advantages of physical hard-cover books (170) with new e-reading functionality developed by the present inventor.
