Various embodiments of the invention provide a system for treating abnormal mucosa in an esophagus comprising an elongated member; an energy delivery structure deployable from the elongated member and adapted to engage a circumferential section of a mucosal lining of the esophagus to deliver energy to the section; and means for delivering energy through the delivery structure under conditions selected to initiate regrowth of a mucosal layer without substantial injury to a sub-mucosal layer underlying the mucosal layer. By injuring or necrosing metaplastic or other abnormal mucosal cells, regrowth of the mucosa substantially free from abnormal cells can be initiated. In an embodiment, the energy delivery structure can include an RF electrode array positioned on a surface of the structure and configured to be coupled to an RF power supply.
Dans différents modes de réalisation, l'invention concerne un système servant à traiter une muqueuse anormale dans l'oesophage et qui est composé d'un élément allongé, d'une structure d'application d'énergie pouvant se déployer depuis l'élément allongé et conçue pour venir en contact avec une partie de la circonférence de la couche muqueuse de l'oesophage afin d'y appliquer de l'énergie, ainsi que de moyens servant à appliquer de l'énergie à travers la structure d'application dans des conditions sélectionnées pour déclencher une nouvelle croissance d'une couche muqueuse sans léser de façon importante la couche sous-muqueuse sous-jacente par rapport à la couche muqueuse. La destruction ou la nécrose de cellules métaplasiques ou d'autres cellules muqueuses anormales permet de déclencher une nouvelle croissance de la muqueuse pratiquement exempte de cellules anormales. Dans un mode de réalisation, la structure d'application d'énergie peut consister en un ensemble d'électrodes haute fréquence placé sur une surface de ladite structure et conçu pour être couplé à une alimentation en courant haute fréquence.
