A system for defibrillating an atrial region of a heart experiencing a supraventricular arrhythmia. The defibrillation system senses and analyzes both atrial and ventricular cardiac signals of the heart to determine if the heart is experiencing a supraventricular arrhythmia. Upon detecting a supraventricular arrhythmia, the defibrillation system begins delivering a train of atrial pacing pulses to the atria of the heart and a series of ventricular pacing pulses to the ventricles of the heart to synchronize the contractions of the heart with the pacing pulses. The defibrillation system then delivers a defibrillation electrical energy pulse across the atrial region at a predetermined coupling interval time after delivering a final atrial pacing pulse and a final ventricular pacing pulse so that the defibrillation pulse will fall outside the occurrence of a T-wave of the heart, thus reducing the likelihood of inducing ventricular fibrillation.
La présente invention concerne un système de défibrillation de la région atriale dans le cas d'un coeur connaissant un épisode d'arythmie supraventriculaire. Ce système de défibrillation sonde et analyse les signaux cardiaques aussi bien auriculaires que ventriculaires de façon à déterminer si le coeur est le siège d'une arythmie supraventriculaire. A la détection d'une telle arythmie supraventriculaire, le système de défibrillation commence à fournir à l'oreillette cardiaque un train d'impulsions de stimulation auriculaire et au ventricule cardiaque une série d'impulsions de stimulation ventriculaire de façon à synchroniser les contractions du coeur avec les impulsions de stimulation. Le système de défibrillation fournit ensuite une impulsion électrique portant sur l'ensemble de la région auriculaire en respectant un intervalle de couplage ventriculaire défini après fourniture d'une impulsion de stimulation auriculaire finale et d'une impulsion de stimulation ventriculaire finale de façon que l'impulsion de défibrillation arrive systématiquement en dehors de la survenue d'une onde T cardiaque, ce qui réduit le risque d'induire une fibrillation ventriculaire.
