In accordance with the present invention, a system and method is provided for producing a safely disposable end product from waste matter containing undesirable materials, such as infectious, biohazardous, hazardous, or radioactive elements. The method comprises the steps of providing a highly basic solvent, immersing the waste matter containing the undesirable materials within the highly basic solvent, and heating the solvent. The waste matter containing the undesirable materials is allowed to remain within the solvent until digested, thereby forming a solution void of any infectious or biohazardous elements and/or containing a concentration of radioisotope below the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for release to a sanitary sewer as defined in applicable federal regulations for the waste matter containing such materials. The system includes a tank or vessel (12) capable of containing a highly basic solvent during a closed digestion reaction, heating means (30) for heating the solvent within the vessel, filtering means (40), and means (41) for removing the post-digestion aqueous solution and solid waste materials from within the vessel (12). The post-digestion product in both aqueous and solid form can then by disposed of by conventional means.
L'invention concerne un système et un procédé conçus pour fabriquer un produit fini, pouvant être éliminer en toute sécurité, à partir de déchets contenant des matières indésirables, par exemple des éléments infectieux, à risque biologique, dangereux, ou radioactifs. Le procédé consiste à produire un solvant hautement basique, à plonger les déchets contenant les matières indésirables dans ce solvant et à chauffer ce dernier. Les déchets contenant les matières indésirables peuvent rester plongés dans le solvant jusqu'à leur digestion et la formation d'une solution libre d'éléments infectieux ou à risque biologique et/ou contenant une concentration de radio-isotopes inférieure à la concentration maximale admissible (CMA) susceptibles d'être évacués vers un conduit sanitaire, comme le définissent les règlements fédéraux en vigueur pour les déchets contenant ces matières. Le système comprend un réservoir ou une cuve (12) pouvant contenir un solvant hautement basique pendant une réaction de digestion anaérobie, des moyens de chauffage (30) pour chauffer le solvant dans la cuve, des moyens de filtrage (40) et des moyens d'évacuation (41) destinés à évacuer de la cuve (12) la solution aqueuse et les déchets solides de post-digestion. Le produit de post-digestion sous formes aqueuse et solide peut alors être éliminer par des moyens classiques.
