A system and method for treating water is disclosed. Accordingly, the system and method treats water to remove suspended solids, as well as protozoancysts, in particular Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocyst, disinfect for bacteria and viruses and remove colour, taste and odour to produce a potable water. A bacteriacide is introduced which is relatively stable and long term. Removal of such bacteriacide is also described where required for human health. The system and method introduces a bacteriacide to the water in an amount sufficient to kill the bacteria and inactivate viruses. The bacteriacide is maintained in the water at least for a time period sufficient to kill the bacteria in the water, and, until the water is desired to be consumed. In this way, there is a decreased likelihood that the water will become recontaminated with the same bacteria and/or viruses before the water is desired to be used. Furthermore, should any bacteria not be initially killed by the bacteriacide, the presence of the bacteriacide should at least decrease the ability of the bacteria to reproduce in substantial quantities until the water is desired to be used. In one embodiment, the bacteriacide comprises metal ions, such as silver ions and/or copper and zinc ions. When the water is desired to be used, the metal ions are removed from the water by passing the water through an ion exchange. In order to introduce the metal ions into the water, the system preferably comprises an electrode having about 70 percent to 90 percent copper, about 5 percent to 15 percent silver and about 5 percent to 15 percent zinc. Alternatively, if only silver is required, the system utilizes a silver containing 26 electrode having an electrically conductive and structurally secure core, such as a core made from mild steel, coated with substantially pure silver. Prior to the introduction of the bacteriacide, the water may be treated by passing the water through diatomaceous earth to remove contaminants from the water and/or passing the water through an initial disinfection stage.
