A system and method for widening a highway (3) and supporting a sound wall (31) is provided that includes a single row of caissons (15) for providing the sole foundation (13) of a breast wall (17) and a sound wall (31). The caissons (15) include a vertically-oriented network of reinforcing steel (46), an upper portion of which is integrated into the steel reinforcing network (43) of a cast-in-place breast wall (17). The sound wall (31) is mounted on and supported by the top ends of the caissons (15) and serves to obstruct the transmission of sound from the highway (3). The vertically-oriented reinforcing members (46) of the caissons (15) are spaced away from the center portion of each caisson in two opposing groups in order to maximize its bending strength in a direction orthogonal to the highway, which is the primary direction in which cut earth, compacted fill material, and winds apply bending moments to the breast wall (17) and sound wall (31). The use of a single row of caissons (15) having a high bending strength in a direction orthogonal to the highway minimizes the labor and materials necessary to support the breast wall (17) and sound wall (31), and advantageously minimizes the amount of space necessary to excavate and construct the foundation (13).

Système et procédé permettant d'élargir une autoroute (3) et de soutenir un mur anti-bruit (31), par une rangée unique de caissons (15) constituant la fondation (13) d'un mur d'appui (17) et d'un mur anti-bruit (31). Les caissons (15) comportent une armature d'acier orientée verticalement (46), dont une partie supérieure est intégrée dans l'armature d'acier (43) d'un mur d'appui (17) coulé sur place. Le mur anti-bruit (31) est monté sur les sommets des caissons, qui lui servent de support, et sert à limiter la transmission du son provenant de l'autoroute (3). Les éléments d'armature (46) orientés verticalement des caissons (15) sont situés à une certaine distance de la partie centrale de chaque caisson, en deux groupes opposés, de façon à garantir une résistance à la flexion maximale dans une direction orthogonale à l'autoroute, qui est la direction primaire selon laquelle la terre déplacée, le matériau de remblai compacté et le vent appliquent des moments de flexion au mur d'appui (17) et au mur anti-bruit (31). L'utilisation d'une seule rangée de caissons (15) présentant une résistance à la flexion élevée dans une direction orthogonale à l'autoroute réduit au minimum les matériaux et le travail nécessaires au soutien du mur d'appui (17) et du mur anti-bruit (31), et réduit de façon avantageuse l'espace nécessaire à l'excavation et à la construction des fondations (13).
