ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a modem for use with optical fibre transmission systems, three bit words of a binary signal to be transmitted are converted into pairs of waveforms selected from three different waveforms so as to provide PAM-PPM modulation of the carrier; demodulation is achieved by multiplying the received signal by a sawtooth waveform at the repetition frequency of the trans- mitted waveforms, and integrating and sampling the multiplied signal to identify the transmitted waveforms. The system reduces the continuous content of the transmitted signal and facilitates synchronisation.
