8209-23 ABSTRACT A process for determining the relative quantity of low atomic number first material mixed with a higher atomic number second material is described. A first beam of low energy rays and a second beam of higher energy rays are directed into a sheet of the mixture passing between radiation sources and detectors. Typically, the first beam is an x-ray beam and the second is a gamma ray beam. Signals from the detectors in the absence of the sheet are obtained, representing the strengths of the first and second beams. Thereafter, the portions of the beams transmitted through the sheet are determined using the same detectors. The relative quantity is then calculated from the values obtained from those two measuring steps. The invention can be used for measuring the concentration of binder material in glass fiber material.
