A system for building furniture having at least two gables each having a height Hg, an inside surface, an outside surface, a front edge, a back edge, and a first and second series of holes drilled in the inside surface. The first series of holes extends in the direction of the height Hg and is drilled at a distance D1 from the back edge. The second series of holes extends parallel to the first series in the direction of the height Hg and is drilled at a distance D2 from the first series. The holes of both of the series are at a distance S from each other. The system also has at least one panel having a width Wp, a front edge, a back edge, two side edges and two holes drilled in each of the side edges. One of the two holes is drilled at a distance D4 from the back edge, the other hole being drilled at a distance D5 from the one hole. Each panel may be fastened to the at least two gables by fastening devices such as interlocking hardware. The height Hg, width Wp, distances D2 and D5 and S are selected so that Hg is greater than or equal to Wp, D2 is equal to D5 and D2 is equal to an integer multiple of S. As a result, each panel may be fastened to the inside surface of each of the gables either in a horizontal manner to form a shelf, by aligning each hole of the panel with a corresponding hole in each of the two series of holes of each of the gables, or in a vertical manner to form a back panel, by aligning the holes of the panel with corresponding holes in each of the first series of holes of the at least two gables.
