A system for capturing an image of the retina (19) includes an alignment system (67) that aligns the eye (20) along a predetermined axis (34) of the system and at a predetermined distance from the system to illuminate a predetermined area of the retina (19) and to capture an image thereof. The predetermined area of the retina includes the optic disk (32). The system includes a non-scanned illumination source of red (60) and green (62) light and a symmetric aspheric lens (16) for a high quality and high contrast image.
