An electro-optical aerosol characterizing system includes a continuous wave laser (24) for generating two beams (26a, 26b) in the red wavelength range, intersecting a particle stream (20) at slightly spaced apart locations. A pulsed UV laser (38) generates a beam that intersects the particle stream at a third location downstream. Laser energy scattered by each particle as it passes the first two locations, is used to compute aerodynamic sizes and UV laser pulsing times (94), so that in each case the UV beam irradiates the particle at the downstream location. Particles containing biological materials or other fluorescing components emit fluorescence signals in response to the irradiation. Accordingly, the system provides information about particle composition as well as particle size.

L'invention concerne un système d'analyse électro-optique d'un aérosol, comprenant un laser à onde entretenue (24), destiné à produire deux faisceaux (26a, 26b) dans la gamme de longueurs d'onde rouge, ces faisceaux croisant un flux de particules (20) à des emplacements légèrement espacés. Un laser ultraviolet pulsé (38) produit un faisceau qui vient croiser ledit flux de particules à un troisième emplacement, situé en aval des deux premiers. L'énergie laser diffusée par chaque particule lorsqu'elle traverse les deux premiers emplacements est utilisée pour calculer la taille aérodynamique des particules et la durée de pulsation du laser ultraviolet (94), de sorte que le faisceau ultraviolet irradie systématiquement la particule qui traverse l'emplacement situé en aval. En réponse à leur irradiation, les particules renfermant des matières biologiques ou d'autres composants fluorescents émettent des signaux de fluorescence. Le système fournit ainsi des informations relatives à la composition et à la taille de ces particules.
