61051-2372 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In many environmental and biological samples there are present large amounts of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal, as compared to the amounts of transition elements and rare earth elements. With these samples conventional ion exchange concentration methods are not selective enough for determination of trace and ultra-trace amounts of transition elements and rare earth elements. The invention provides a method and apparatus for detecting selected trace transition elements or rare earth elements in samples containing alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. The sample is passed through chelator means under conditions which retain all the trace element but only part of the alkali. Remaining alkali is stripped by means of a first eluant while trace elements are retained. Thereafter the trace elements are stripped with a second eluant, concentrated, stripped from the concentator by means of a third eluant and passed to a detector.
