A system and a method for encoding and decoding stereoscopic images are described. A stereoscopic image com-prises at least two sub- images arranged according to a first configuration and intended for a user's right eye and left eye, respec-tively. During the video signal post-production stage, a chromatic code is embedded which in adapted to provide information about said configuration. At receiver level, decoding means (14) are used which are adapted to receive said stereoscopic image, recognise the configuration of said at least two sub-images based on information embedded into said stereoscopic image, and ar-range said at least two sub-images according to a second predetermined configuration.

Cette invention se rapporte à un système et à un procédé de codage et de décodage dimages stéréoscopiques. Une image stéréoscopique comprend au moins deux images secondaires disposées selon une première configuration et destinées à l'il droit et à l'il gauche d'un utilisateur, respectivement. Au cours de l'étape de postproduction du signal vidéo, on intègre un code chromatique qui est adapté pour fournir des informations qui concernent ladite configuration. Au niveau du récepteur, on utilise des moyens de décodage (14) qui sont adaptés pour recevoir ladite image stéréoscopique, reconnaître la configuration desdites deux images secondaires ou plus sur la base des informations intégrées dans ladite image stéréoscopique et à disposer lesdites deux images secondaires ou plus selon une deuxième configuration prédéterminée.
