This invention is directed to a high energy impact system adapted for use at atmospheric pressure for reducing the particle size of materials to an average diameter of less than about 600 microns, the system comprising the combination of pulverizing hammers which operates at an impact velocity of between about 400 fps to about 700 fps, means for providing a high specific input power through the pulverizing hammers of between about 25 hp/ft2 to about 100 hp/ft2 swept by the hammers.
