ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A handling system used with an input conveyor operating at a substantially constant input-advance speed and delivering articles one at a time at the input speed to an input station has an output station spaced from the input station and adapted to hold an upwardly open receptacle and a transfer conveyor having an upstream end at the input station and a downstream end at the output station. The upstream end is positioned to receive the articles from the input conveyor. A drive continuously advances the transfer conveyor to displace the articles in a travel direction from the input station to the output station and to deposit the articles at the output station in the receptacle. A blocking element can move between the stations between a position blocking movement of the articles from the input station to the output station and a freeing position permitting such movement. A controller connected to the blocking element periodically displaces the blocking element into the blocking position and thereby causes the articles on the transfer conveyor upstream of the blocking element to bunch up and slide on the transfer conveyor immediately upstream of the blocking element. Thus even though the input and transfer conveyors operate continuously, the articles are piled up in groups and delivered as groups to the receptacle. The handling system can easily be reconfigured to different size articles, to groups including different numbers of articles and to different size output boxes. A method of operating the handling system is also disclosed.
