ABSTRACT A separate, self-contained, discrete, insulating sash is provided for use in combination with an existing building wall structure of the type defining a relatively shallow recess having an outwardly facing, open side adjacent longitudinal edges of the wall surfaces. The sash is adapted for mounting in the recess between first and second edges of said wall surfaces, and includes a sash panel having one side arranged to face the second surface of the wall structure and an opposite side to face toward an open side of the recess. A frame around a peripheral edge portion of the sash panel including at least one pair of elongated frame elements to be positioned parallel to and spaced between first and second longitudinal edges of the wall surfaces. The frame elements include a pair of spaced apart wall segments having opposing wall faces arranged to be generally normal to and projecting toward the open side of the recess. Each frame element has a transverse cross-section with a flange element parallel to a face of the sash panel and the wall segments extending normal to that face. This Cross-section provides a greater strength to resist against longitudinally spaced bending forces applied to the frame element by virtue of wind loads than against applied forces acting on the sash in a direction parallel to a face of the sash panel. A pair of pivot pins mounted on the frame elements engage the adjacent wall surfaces of the building and pivotally support the sash in the recess for movement about a pivot axis, to permit the sash to pivot to a position sloping away from the second wall surface.
