A multimedia system for rendering multimedia content (208) in a portable device having an embedded processor (304). The portable device includes one or more rendering resources. A method is provided that performs operations of generating a multimedia object (318) based on the multimedia content (208), associating a format handler with the multimedia object (318), and controlling a selected rendering resource using the format handler to render the multimedia content (208) from the multimedia object (318).
