A system for playing card games remotely includes both a multimedia communication system that allows players located remotely from each other to seeand hear each other, and a "card toaster" and associated image recognition system at each game site which receives and manages a physical deck of cards at every site at which the game is being played. The toaster has the capability of (1) reading cards, for example, by scanning them, (2) finding particular cards, and, if necessary, sorting them, and (3) distributing cards, such as by dealing them. The system enables the players to deal and then play a game, such as the game of bridge, in a manner which closely approximates the manner in which a game is played when all players are co-located. Thus, once play is started, the image recognition system reads the cards played on a table at any site, and transmits information regarding those cards to the other sites. At the other sites, the card toaster is signaled and arranged to distribute the same cards, face up on the table. (Fig. 1)
L'invention est un dispositif permettant de jouer aux cartes à distance. Ce dispositif utilise un système de communication multimédia qui permet à des joueurs éloignés les uns des autres de se voir et de s'entendre, et un distributeur de cartes avec dispositif de reconnaissance d'images connexe installé à chaque site de jeux qui reçoit et gère un paquet de cartes matérielles à chaque site où l'on joue. Ce distributeur peut 1) reconnaître les cartes, en les balayant par exemple, 2) trouver des cartes particulières et, au besoin les trier, et 3) distribuer les cartes. Le dispositif de l'invention permet aux joueurs d'échanger des cartes et de jouer aux cartes, par exemple de jouer au bridge, d'une façon qui ressemble beaucoup à celle d'une partie de cartes entre joueurs qui se trouvent tous au même site. Ainsi, quand la partie est commencée, le dispositif de reconnaissance d'images reconnaît les cartes placées sur une table à l'un ou à l'autre site et transmet les informations sur ces cartes à chacun des autres sites où le distributeur local distribue les mêmes cartes face vers le haut sur la table locale.
