A system and method for estimating the NO2 concentration in the gas provided to a patient. The therapy of using nitric oxide to threat the lungs of a patient includes administering that gas along with a gas containing oxygen. Since the mixing of NO and oxygen cause a reaction leading to the formation of NO2 and which is toxic, the method and system determine the concentration of oxygen in the oxygen containing gas, the concentration of NO in the NO containing gas and the residence time between the time those gasses are mixed together to the time that mixture is administered to the patient. Those values are then used, preferably in a microprocessor to access a look up table in the memory of the processor, to thereby provide an estimation of the NO2 concentration of the gas administered to the patient.

Système et méthode pour évaluer la concentration de NO2 dans le gaz administré à un malade. La thérapie consistant à utiliser de l'oxyde nitrique pour traiter les poumons d'un patient revient à administrer ce gaz avec un gaz renfermant de l'oxygène. Étant donné que le mélange de NO et d'oxygène provoque une réaction conduisant à la formation de NO2, qui est toxique, la méthode et le système de l'invention déterminent la concentration d'oxygène dans le gaz qui en renferme, la concentration de NO toujours dans le gaz qui en renferme, et la période de temps entre le moment où ces gaz sont mélangés et le moment où le mélange est administré au patient.
