26 47,778 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for scanning a continuous tone image to produce a multi-line video signal which is processed to produce a screened image is disclosed. The system com- prises a scanner for scanning the continuous tone image to produce a multi-line video signal with the amplitude of the video signal corresponding to the grey scale of the continuous tone image. The video signal is compared to periodic reference signals to produce a multi-line two- valued video signals with one value representing total black at the other by your representative in white. The two-valued video signal is coupled to a printer to produce a screened image of the continuous tone image being scanned.
