A location verification system suitable for use with a track-based railroad vehicle positioning system. The system comprises a database for storing a positioning map and a location verification device that includes a first input for receiving location data elements from a primary source and a second input for receiving data elements derived from the track-based railroad vehicle positioning system from a secondary source. The location verification device further includes a processing unit that is operative for processing the location data elements at least in part on the basis of the positioning map to derive an expected data element. The processing unit is further operative for processing the data elements associated with the track-based railroad vehicle positioning system at least in part on the basis of the expected data element to derive a verification data element indicative of whether the track-based railroad vehicle positioning system is in a fault condition.
