In accordance with a first broad aspect, the invention provides a secondary system for monitoring a railroad vehicle moving under the control of a primary system. The primary system is operative for controlling the railroad vehicle on the basis of information received from a primary source. The secondary system comprises an input for receiving railroad vehicle displacement information sent over a wireless link from a source other than the primary source, a processing unit for receiving and processing the railroad vehicle displacement information for determining the occurrence of a fault in the primary system and an output for outputting a fault signal indicative of the occurrence of the fault in the primary system, when the processing unit determines that a fault has occurred in the primary system.
