A SYSTEM FOR REDUCING THE RATING REQUIREMENTS OF STATIC COMPENSATOR COMPONENTS AT HVDC INVERTER STATIONS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a static compensator for use with HVDC converter stations, the rating requirements of the compensator transformer, thyristor switches for switched capacitors, compensator capacitor banks and their tuning reactors, are reduced. The compensator is arranged to regulate AC system voltage in accordance with a first reference. The voltage on the secondary bus, i.e., the secondary winding of the compensator transformer, is regulated in accordance with a second reference and this overrides the regulation of AC system voltage for larger leading currents supplied to the AC system. These larger leading currents are not required as they represent leading currents which exceed unity power factor operation by a predetermined amount. Being able to limit the leading current in this manner enables lower rating requirements.
