In the system for removing volatile impurities from ground water by the generation of under-pressure within a well shaft that is driven into the area of ground water that is contaminated, a vertical flow of the ground water within the shaft itself and in the surrounding ground is enhanced by means of a suction pump within the shaft. The output of this pump is controllable. In addition, purification gas is introduced through a feed channel below the ground water plane. After rising through the ground water, the gases are drawn off above the ground water plane and passed to a multi- stage filter system that incorporates connections to the feed pipe for the gases into the shaft. By this means, controlled by means of an air choke, at least some of the purification gas can be returned to the well shaft. ***
