A protocol for a computer network in which routing operation codes (ROCs) in headers of packets transmitted within the network specify to a receiving router which of a number of routing or switching methods to apply to forward associated packets. The packets may be forwarded in any of the following modes: (a) a broadcast mode, (b) a hop-by-hop mode based on receiving node address information, (c) a label swapping mode, (d) a source-switching mode, (e) a flow switching mode, or (f) a hop-by-hop mode based on sending mode address information. In the label swapping mode, packets are accepted by the receiving router if the packets include a media access control address of the receiving router, and packets are forwarded from the receiving router according to a switching table indexed by a media access control address of a transmitting router. In the source switching mode, the header include source routes specified in terms of local link identifiers used by routers in the network. Also, receiving routers are identified using local link identifier associated with communication links between a transmitting router and an intended receiving router.
L'invention concerne un protocole destiné à un réseau informatique dans lequel les codes d'opération de routage (ROC) contenus dans les en-têtes des paquets transmis dans le réseau indiquent à un routeur récepteur lequel des procédés de routage et de commutation doit s'appliquer aux paquets associés pour faire suivre les paquets associés. On peut faire suivre les paquets selon un des modes suivants: (a) mode de diffusion; (b) mode point par point basé sur les informations d'adresse du noeud récepteur; (c) mode d'échange d'étiquettes; (d) mode de commutation de sources; (e) mode de commutation de flux; ou (f) mode point par point basé sur l'envoi des informations sur l'adresse du mode. Dans le mode d'échange d'étiquettes, les paquets sont acceptés par le routeur de réception s'ils comprennent une adresse de contrôle d'accès au support du routeur récepteur, et l'on fait suivre les paquets depuis le routeur récepteur conformément à une table de commutation indexée par une adresse de contrôle d'accès au support du routeur émetteur. Dans le mode de commutation de sources, l'en-tête comprend les routes sources indiquées en termes d'identificateurs de liens locaux utilisés par les routeurs dans le réseau.
