ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a system for sealing relatively movable elements, including relatively rotatable members under pressure. A first relatively rotatable member includes a peripheral groove for retaining a seal, as for example, an O-ring. A resilient element is located within the groove beneath the seal and exerts an outwardly directed force on the seal causing the outer surface of the seal to abut against the outer surface of an adjacent second relatively rotatable member. Fluid pressure between the first and second rotatable members is channeled beneath the seal to supplement the resilient force on the seal and maintain the seal in a contiguous abutting relationship with the outer surface of the second relatively rotatable member. The resilient element includes a plurality of separate resilient components spaced apart from each other to provide space for thermal expansion of the seal.
