Abstract of the Disclosure A support system is provided for plants, bushes and small trees and the system uses a channel-shaped batten or rail with a C-shaped cross-section. The rail is adapted for attachment to walls or for insertion into the earth and can hold attaching means in the form of expansions on a string. The string is used to suspend or retain the plants in co-operation with the rail. A connecting member having a foot and a head is used to connect the rail to another rail or batten and thus a trellis can be formed if desired. The foot is inserted into the opening in the side of the rail and is turned 90° for attachment. The head grips around another rail having an outer profile corresponding to a profile of the head.
