ABSTRACT A system for the exchange and distribution of information over a subscribers' telephone network is dis- closed in which data may be either exchanged between a subscriber and a data network or information may be obtained from a data base. Use of the system may be made indepen- dently of and contemporaneously with the normal working of the telephone network, the subscribers' lines being used for bidirectional data transmission between subscriber loca- tions and the exchange but without passing through either the telephone set or the exchange equipment.
