Abstract There is disclosed a system for regulating the speed of an autonomous hydraulic turbine, driving a constant frequency AC alternator. It uses electri- cal resistors as a control load so that the turbine water flow remains constant. There is a quartz clock producing a reference frequency, which is compared with the alternator frequency, using a shift register. This shift register transforms the frequency differences into an analog signal. The output of this register passes via a filter chain and a PID circuit to an analog-digital converter, to be transformed into digital bits, to be optical-linked to the triacs switching the braking load. For a given number of bits, a high number of switching possibilities of -the control loads exist, assuring a rapid control of the alternator frequency. Waterhammer conditions in the penstock are thus also avoided. The control loads are activated after the first cross-over of the alternator voltage to avoid harmonics of the basic alternator frequency.
