ABSTRACT A system for identifying conductors in a multi- conductor cable, grouped by pairs. The system includes a transmitter with a dial tone multi-frequency generator to produce a unique identification signal for each pair of conductors, and a circuit to apply the identification signal successively to the conductors forming the pair. The system also includes a receiver with a decoder and a display to indicate presence and identity of an identification signal present on either conductor of a a pair of conductors to be identified. The receiver also includes a ground fault detection circuit.
