ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for impact welding by magnetic implosion includes a driving coil affixed to a ballistic work piece, the driving coil consisting of a plurality of wires connected to a power source, such as a capacitor bank. The ballistic work piece is configured to fit into a space, such as a chamfer, for the weldment material between work pieces to be welded, such as pipes to be connected at a joinder. Welding is accomplished by implosion of the ballistic work piece against the stationary work piece, the implosion resulting from a surge of current from the power source through the driving coil. Substantial efficiency with respect to the amount of energy from the power source converted into actual kinetic energy of the ballistic work piece is achieved through matching the impedance of the power source with the impedance of the driving coil. This is accomplished by maximizing a coupling parameter A for achievable values of an inductance-related parameter B, the coupling parameter A being related to the diameter of the work piece, the self-inductance of the driving coil, the capacitance of the capacitor banks, the initial charging voltage of the capacitor bank, the mass of the ballistic work piece, among others. Various configurations for the driving coil and the ballistic work piece are provided applicable to particular welding requirements. A method for impact welding by magnetic implosion utilizes steps of providing a ballistic work piece, a driving coil affixed to the ballistic work piece, providing a power source connected to the driving coil, and providing the driving coil and the power source with matching impedances by means of maximizing coupling parameter A for a range of values of the inductance parameter B.
