A method (30) of determining an out-of-balance condition of an electronically controlled motor (12). The method includes: determining a plurality of parameters (34, 36, 42, 44) based on measurements taken from the electronically controlled motor, and calculating a composite score by combining said plurality of parameters into a mathematical transfer function (40). The mathematical transfer function includes a non-zero weighting factor for each of the plurality of parameters.
