A transdermal therapeutic system for the controlled release of the active ingredient to the skin has a backing layer and an adhesive reservoir layer, where the reservoir layer contains a polymer material, a softening agent and pilocarpine base or one of its pharmaceutically acceptable salts. Also a semipermeable membrane for controlled release of pilocarpine, encapsulating the pilocarpine and having an opening in the capsule material, is used in treating glaucoma.
