A polypeptide designated H400 and its encoding nucleic acid are provided as markers specific for activated human T cells. Activated T cells are detected immunochemically by monoclonal antibodies specific for H400 or for its immunogenic peptide fragments. Activated T cells are also detected by nucleic acid probes directed to messenger RNA encoding the H400 protein.
