ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved catalyst composition is disclosed for the polymerization of olefins which comprises a mixture of: (a) Group IVB to VIII transition metal halide: (b) at least one alkyl metal cocatalyst having the formula TnMR'3-n wherein n = 1 or 2, T is R3DCH2, D being selected from the group consisting of Si, Ge and Sn and M being selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga and In, R is a methyl or ethyl group and R' is selected from the group consisting of C1-C8 primary alkyl or aralkyl including unhindered branched groups; and (c) at least one Lewis base, the molar ratio of alkyl metal cocatalyst to transition metal halide being 0.5:1 to 50:1.
