A method of manipulation of a selected block of cells within a table having an orientation of a plurality of fields a at least one dimension, the table presented on an interactive user display comprising the steps of (a) selecting a subset of cells of said table as a block on said display, said block having an orientation of two or more of the plurality of fields of said cells along at least one dimension; (b) identifying characteristics of each of said fields of said block, in the direction of said orientation; (c) selecting a cell containing representative data for each of said fields of said block in the direction of said orientation; (d) generating an interface and displaying at least a field name for each of the fields of said block and the corresponding representative data in an editable form; (e) selecting and modifying the representative data of any one of said fields of said block along the at least one dimension; (f) correspondingly modifying the data of each cell of the block in a direction perpendicular to the modified representative data cell; and (g) returning the block of cells with the modified data to said table for display.
