ABSTRACT This invention related to methods of reading tachograph charts. Such carts are sequentially read by a chart-reading equipment to derive signals representative of the information recorded on the charts. In order to identify these signals information has been manually entered into the chart-reading equipment to identify the information provided on the respective charts, the chart-reading equipment provided in respect of each chart a respective signal having a first part representative of the corresponding manually-entered identity and a second part representative of the information recorded on that chart. The entering of said identities into the chart-reading equipment reduces the rate at which the charts can be read by the chart-reading equipment. According to this invention the charts are provided with individual and different machine-readable representations and the chart-reading equipment automatically derives during the reading of the charts respective signals representative of the said chart representations to identify the corresponding said signals representative of chart information. Such a method obviates the necessity of manually entering information into the chart-reading equipment and thereby permits the rate at which the charts are read to be increased.
