A tactile stimulation apparatus produces signals which are decoded to produce a programmed sequence of output signals. The output signals are supplied to an array of switches or actuators which are supported on a seat, a bed-like structure, or an article such as a helmet or garment. When the switches or actuators are actuated, a contact surface member which is associated with the actuated switch is driven to press against the body. The programming of the signals is variable and such as to induce a tactile stimulation of the body which can be used for therapeutic purposes, the transmission of information or the like.
